2026 Mud Season Destinations

Ouray, Colorado

written by Jonnye Phifer

It’s Shoulder Season in the mountains, which offers an opportunity for exploration of our state without the summertime crowds. With the record-low snowpack, mountain trails will be accessible earlier than normal, so make the best of our drought and get out this month to explore!

  • Southwest Colorado (Ouray/Telluride/Durango): Known as the "Switzerland of America," Ouray is perfect for waterfall viewing and mountain scenery, according to Visit Ouray.

  • Colorado Springs Area: Visit the Garden of the Gods, hike Pikes Peak, and visit waterfalls like Seven Falls and Helen Hunt Falls, as recommended by Uncover Colorado.

  • In Manitou Springs, check out Rainbow Falls; or, for an extreme challenge, climb the Manitou Incline. What was once a railroad track now consists of ~ 2,744 railroad tie steps over one mile in length, with an average 41% incline (hitting 68% at its steepest) and a 2,000-foot elevation gain. This trail is rated Extreme for good reason. The Manitou Incline is free, but requires timed reservations

  • Great Sand Dunes National Park: The tallest dunes in North America are the centerpiece in a diverse landscape of grasslands, wetlands, forests, alpine lakes, and tundra. Visit or camp on a moonless night to experience countless stars in this International Dark Sky Park! There are no timed entries or reservations to visit. A temporary creek flows in May, making it a perfect spot for a Colorado beach vacation! Check the flows before you go!

  • Glenwood Springs: Family-friendly, featuring a large hot spring-fed pool, adventure park, and walkability.

  • Salida/Buena Vista: A central hub offering lower elevation, mild temperatures, hot springs (Mt. Princeton), local artisans, and Arkansas River access.

  • Camping: Free camping is easy to come by, as long as you know where to look. National forests hold most of the free camping in Colorado, followed by BLM land (Bureau of Land Management). Or reserve a campsite at any one of national forest areas.

  • Attend theMountainfilm Festival in Telluride

  • Hiking & Biking: Lower elevation trails are dry and clear of snow, making for great hiking and cycling conditions.
